About

We are a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the railroad history of San Francisco and the Peninsula for the enjoyment and education of future generations.

Our History

Formed to take custody of State Belt Engine No. 4 and two State Belt flatcars, San Francisco Trains aims to restore these items of historical significance to operation and give them a permanent home in or around San Francisco. In 2007, we received our 501c3 non-profit organization status. Although initially conceived as a group focused solely on the locomotive and flat cars, our search for a permanent home for them brought us to the abandoned Bayshore Roundhouse in Brisbane, and our focus expanded to include the preservation of this early 20th century building.

What We Do

Our work remains centered on the locomotive, flat cars, and roundhouse, although we have also taken on other projects relating to the broader goal of preserving local railroad history and artifacts. In keeping with our purpose to educate the public and the past and future potential of railroads, we have given presentations on San Francisco Railroading History and on the State Belt #4 at public meetings and community groups.

Who We Are

Our volunteers include the mechanically inclined, history lovers, and preservationists. Professional mechanics, engineers, machinists, current and former railroad employees pass their skills along to apprentices of all ages. Just like other success stories, people employed in fields diverse as architecture, chemistry and software come together to work. If you wish to join or support us, see our page on how to help.
